The Tortoise and the Hare

I was holding the Power Animal Oracle cards in my hand, preparing to pull one with this intention: “Please tell us what we need to know at this time. Thank you.” That’s a prayer I recite prior to pulling one or more cards when performing readings for people via my Facebook page. I also know that whatever message I receive will be relevant for myself. I trust that when I post the message the card brings, whoever can benefit from it will see it and its meaning will resonate with them.
At this point in my life, I was doing my best to take things at a slower pace. To not rush what I was doing, especially when typing on my computer. I’m thankful for the automatic spellcheck feature, but whenever I need to make a correction, I get a bit frustrated and always have to go back and change it right away, rather than finishing the piece I’m writing and doing all the corrections at the end. Retracing my steps like this tends to slow me down, and to make up for the time I’ve lost going back to make corrections, I feel like I have to hurry in order to catch up.
But, of course, by rushing to catch up for lost time, I typically make more mistakes and not all of those are automatically corrected by spellcheck, so back I go to make amends! Sounds a little crazy, doesn’t it?
To help solve this conundrum, I placed a small ceramic Tortoise totem just under my computer screen. Tortoise spirit is one of my power animals, and the totem serves as a physical reminder for me to move a little slower. So, with Tortoise in place, I slowed down my typing and continued on my mission of receiving and conveying messages via the oracle cards.
I paused, settled back in my chair, and then moved my attention to the cards. I picked up the deck, shuffled it, closed my eyes, took a deep breath, focused on my intention, then lightly ran my fingers over the cards until one made itself known to me by having a different “vibe” to it. And that’s the card I pulled. The card was RABBIT and much like the others in the deck, it has one word just under the title that hints at the message. That word is FERTILITY. As I scanned the card, a beautiful image of a rabbit filled my screen. Then at the very bottom, a short message appeared, an extension of what was hinted at with the key word fertility:

YOUR CREATIVITY is at a peak

I thought that was a great message for everyone, me included, especially as I was being prompted to focus more on writing. As often happens with guidance, whether through oracle cards or other means, the message tends to confirm something you’re already aware of, but may be lurking or hiding just beneath the veil of intuition. When you get confirmation, that inner knowing becomes more illuminated.

From there I turned to the more expansive message in the guidebook that accompanies the cards:

“This is an incredibly creative and fertile time right now for you! Get going on those projects you’ve always wanted to do or ones that you started but haven’t finished. Not necessarily ones that have anything to do with earning money, but ones which you have a passion for, whether writing, painting, sculpting, or some other expressive art form. Don’t even think about whether you’re good enough, and don’t measure your creations against anyone else’s. Let them be the unique manifestations of your fertile imagination without comparing them to anything or anyone else…
If you’re spending a lot of time frittering away precious time on things that really aren’t all that important, then take all that energy and pour it into your creative pursuits. If everything to you is work, work, work, then it’s even more important that you play, play, play through these channels. All those distractions sidetrack you from knowing the joy of pure and unadulterated artistic revelation. Go for it and let yourself feel uninhibited joy in the process!”
Other Associations: Fertility; Vigilance; Abundance; Agility
I liked and appreciated the message, as I’ve been attempting to adjust my schedule to create room for writing, whether articles, workshops, inspirational material, and hopefully very soon, a new book. Plus I’m working on a collection of my poetry I’ve written over the last few years that I call a passion project.
Rabbit’s message – conveyed through the oracle card – was perfect, something I needed to hear as it meant honoring that creative pulse I’ve been feeling lately that says I need to write. Not want, or would like to, but need to write. The inner voice of my ancestors commented and said, “we’ve been telling you that for some time!” Ah, well, everything in its own time, and the time is now.
I decided to keep the card out in the open so it remained visible as a reminder of the powerful message encouraging the creative process. Not only for me but for anyone who happened to see it. I set it up in plain sight, standing up, leaning against the desktop computer screen, right next to my tortoise totem. Then, like the proverbial flash of lightning, it suddenly occurred to me as I viewed the two side-by-side: a rabbit is also referred to as a hare. By the title of this article, you’ll know where this is going. Right in front of me was also a very significant message from — the tortoise and the hare!
As well as the steady reminder from tortoise through the totem representation to move a little slower, another element was added to that message. In Aesop’s fable, while the hare (rabbit) was taking his time, frolicking around off the trail, the tortoise kept moving steadily along toward the goal at a pace that ultimately helped the slower animal triumph in the race! It inspired and encouraged me to keep moving at a steady pace on projects I’m working on, reserving play time (which is also needed) for when I’m not aiming for a specific goal.

Thank you, Tortoise. And thank you, Hare/Rabbit!
