Freedom of the Spirit: What True Independence Means

A Shamanic Perspective

Every year in July, many of us pause to celebrate Independence Day—a time to honor freedom, self-determination, and the courage of those who helped shape the course of history.

This year carries special significance as the United States commemorates its 250th anniversary. Such milestones invite reflection not only about our collective journey, but also our personal one.

What does freedom truly mean?

For many people, freedom is often thought of in external terms—the ability to choose our path, express our beliefs, and live according to our values. These freedoms are important and worthy of gratitude. Yet from a spiritual perspective, there is another kind of freedom that deserves our attention: the freedom of the soul.

Many people live in a way that appears free on the surface, yet internally feel constrained by fear, self-doubt, old wounds, limiting beliefs, or patterns that no longer serve them. These invisible constraints can quietly shape our lives. They may influence our decisions, affect our relationships, limit our sense of possibility, or prevent us from expressing our authentic selves.

Shamanic healing often involves reclaiming lost aspects of ourselves and releasing what keeps us from living fully. In many ways, it is a journey toward greater freedom. Nature offers countless examples of this principle. Birds soar through open skies. Rivers flow around obstacles while continuing toward their destination. Trees grow according to their inherent nature, reaching toward the light without questioning whether they deserve to flourish. Nature doesn’t struggle to become what it was meant to be. It simply expresses its essence.

As human beings, we sometimes lose touch with our own essence. We adapt to expectations, absorb messages from others, and carry stories about who we should be. Over time, we may find ourselves living according to those stories rather than listening to the wisdom of our own soul. True independence requires that we reconnect with who we really are.

One of the most powerful questions we can ask ourselves is:
“What would I do if I were not governed by fear?”

The answer may reveal where greater freedom is seeking expression in your life.

Perhaps it is freedom from an old identity. Perhaps it is freedom from a limiting belief. Perhaps it is freedom to speak your truth, follow your calling, or trust your intuition more fully.

Freedom is rarely a destination we arrive at once and for all. More often, it is an ongoing practice of choosing authenticity over conditioning, courage over fear, and presence over habit.

As we celebrate this season of independence, I invite you to consider where your own soul is calling for greater freedom.
What wants to be released?
What wants to emerge?
What would it feel like to live with greater alignment between your inner truth and your outer life?

These questions may not have immediate answers, and that’s perfectly fine. Simply holding them with curiosity can begin to open new possibilities.

The journey of spiritual growth is not about becoming someone else. It is about becoming more fully yourself.

And perhaps that is the deepest freedom of all.
