Q: What Is Shamanic Healing?

Shamanic healing is an ancient practice that’s existed for at least 100,000 years and is considered the most ancient and spiritual healing practice known to man. Shamanic healing techniques stem from a way of life known as Shamanism. It is the art of connecting the spiritual and non-spiritual worlds to foster healing and growth, and guidance.

Considered the “first doctors and psychotherapists,” these individuals regularly conducted shamanic services for people in their communities. The word “shaman” comes from the Siberian Tungus tribe and translates to “one who knows.”

Shamans act as mediums by receiving instructions from spirit guides as to how to heal physical, emotional, and mental conditions as well as guidance and answers to various questions and concerns. The foundational practice to receive this direct revelation from spirit guides is the shamanic journey, a type of trance where the shaman sends his consciousness (or soul) into non-ordinary reality (NOR) to meet with his spirit allies. Unlike dreams where your soul can unconsciously travel out of body into other realms, the Shaman intentionally leaves his body to go on the shamanic journey.

A shamanic healer will travel to one of three worlds in non-ordinary reality on their journey (lower, middle, and upper world) in order to retrieve the wisdom for guidance and healing methods they need to perform their healing ceremonies.

Lower World

Looks just like the natural world. Here is where the shaman can connect with spirit animals and other spirit beings such as plant, tree, and mineral spirits.

Middle World

In this world, shamans can communicate with spirits that live in ordinary physical reality.
This is the world shamans typically journey through to connect with nature to discover new plant medicines, recover lost or stolen objects, and perform long distance healing.

Upper World

Also called the Celestial Realm, this world is where human-looking spirit guides dwell. Here the Shaman finds Ancestors, Ascended Masters, Archangels and others. The journey is typically to get wisdom from any of these wise and all-knowing spirits.

Q: How Does Shamanic Healing Work?

The shamanic practitioner will connect with spirits in NOR to help the cleansing and healing of an individual in the real world. Although any treatment can be done remotely, typically the process involves being in a relaxed environment where the shaman will have an open and honest conversation with you to understand what you’re looking to get out of the experience. The shaman will then journey to determine the type of treatment advised for the client, return from NOR, then describe to the client what information was received and if any healing ceremony was suggested, what that would involve. Once the client agrees, the shaman then performs the treatment. Though it’s the exception, in some instances the client will journey simultaneously with the shamanic healer and after returning both will discuss what they experienced.
