Mockingbird’s Message

About a week ago I was in my office and noticed a persistent chirping from a bird outside. It went on for quite awhile and had a regular cadence to it. I went outside to see where the chirping was coming from and as I looked up I saw a mockingbird at the top of the Arbutus tree in our backyard. A second flew to the top of the tree as I was greeting the first one. They continued their raspy bellowing for some time.

The next day a friend who stopped by announced that one of the birds had “dive bombed” her! She further reported how that same bird then went into a small tree just outside one of the windows of the house. We came to the conclusion that most likely there were some baby mockingbirds in a nest in that tree, so I decided to investigate. I walked over to the tree and saw what looked like a nest tucked away into the branches.
Before I could see who might be in the nest, a sudden “whoosh” and a flicker of something on the back of my head sent chills up and down my spine. Mama (or was it papa?) mockingbird had swooped down to warn me away! Still determined to see the babies, I got a stepladder, climbed up two steps and peeked into the nest. There were two little baby birds!

Of course I didn’t have much time to enjoy seeing them and didn’t want to disturb them or the nest. Mama bird swooped at me again to let me know she meant business and would be fiercely protective of her offspring. Amazing that I felt so scared by such a diminutive being! So I made a deal with mama and papa bird. I let them know I would not in any way disturb or harm their little ones. Since I did, I’ve kept my distance from the nest and they have not dive-bombed me any more, though mama bird flies to just outside my office door from time to time just to remind me of our deal!

Since this was all very unusual I was very curious as to the spiritual significance of these beings showing up like this. Mockingbird spirit was vividly present through not only mama and papa but the two little babies as well. I asked Mockingbird spirit what she was trying to communicate. There were three messages. First, she conveyed how important it was to fight for what you believe is important. Second, that my work with children via the products for children I’ve been producing are significant in encouraging children’s spiritual consciousness. Third message: sing!
Valuable messages all.

Mockingbird’s encouragement to fight or stand up for what I believe in is encouragement for speaking my truth in my writing and my teaching. Old habits of fearing disapproval and therefore holding back my truth creep in from time to time, yet I understand more than ever the necessity of being fully my authentic self, with no apologies or excuses. Sometimes challenging to do so, but Spirits urging via Mockingbird tells me that it is increasingly imperative that I do.

Although I’ve enjoyed co-creating (with Jesseca) the Children’s Spirit Animal Cards and writing and recording the Children’s Spirit Animal Stories, I confess I’ve had mixed feelings about going further. Yet Spirit has assigned me these projects and I’m more than willing to do them. Mocking bird confirmed that this is a valuable aspect of my work. I’d also been neglecting playing my guitar and singing, but since I got the message I’m back to doing so at least a few minutes every day.

So perhaps these messages are relevant for you as well? What inhibits you from speaking your truth? That’s a little different from “being honest,” always saying what’s on your mind. It means being consistent in words and action with what you believe while allowing others the same courtesy and respect. Speak your truth or keep a noble silence.

As for children, the children of the Earth are the ones who will eventually be responsible for the stewardship of the land. As we evolve we have the opportunity to teach the children in our own domain what we are learning about how to live in greater harmony with the natural world. We have the opportunity to heal our wounds so that they do not have to carry them. We have the opportunity to teach them that Spirit is One, yet expressed in a multitude of ways on this Earth and throughout the Cosmos.

And of course SING! Far too often we have old messages embedded in our subconscious that have become beliefs and fears about expressing ourselves in this way. One way to overcome these is to take the plunge and just do it. As has been said, sing like no one is listening. I double dare you!

Thank you Mockingbird. May you and your babies thrive!
